If you read the title of this post and thought to yourself, man this sounds like an oxymoron, I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone. In a hustle filled culture that glorifies side-hustles, no sleep, and “grinding” to get all the things done, it’s no wonder that the word rest sounds like something we should never indulge in, let alone experience.
But, we’re human. So that little r word you’ve been avoiding is a non-negotiable. Especially if you have little humans in tow. And, I’m here to tell you that rest is not only necessary, but it can be productive. Your body needs to recharge and your better off when you take the time to listen to the cues your body sends you when it does.
Here are three ways rest can benefit you:
I. Increase Your Efficiency
Often times rest is viewed as the opposite of work. We tend to think, either we rest or we are being productive. But when we rest, it causes us to be more productive and efficient in more ways than one.
When we commit to making time for rest, our work can immediately benefit. The benefit can come into play because when we take time away from our time to actively work, we will have to become more focused during the shortened time we have and really focus on what’s important instead of the busy work that makes us feel like we are working. When we have less time, we begin to understand the true value of it and work in ways to “move the needle forward” instead of doing mindless and meaningless work.
II. Boost Your Creativity
Ever wonder why you might get some of your most creative thoughts while you’re taking a long hot relaxing shower? Or when you’re taking a stroll? Or maybe even before you lay down to take a nap? That’s because your actually never stops working, but works in a different capacity when you’re resting. And your brain needs to function in different capacities to bring you the best results.
III. Increases Happiness
When you spend time getting rest, you feel energized, relaxed, and happier! It’s during times of rest that you get to recharge and steer away those unwanted feelings of negativity and burnout! Rest helps you reset and enjoy the moment you’re in. You were never designed to just keep going like the energizer bunny. Your body needs rest and will be better for it when you take some time to relax.
Taking time to rest feels especially great after a hard day of work or after we feel extremely productive. Instead of keeping the midnight oil burning and trying to work all hours of the night to get allllllll the things done, remember that your body and mind need time to reset. Resting also tends to come a little bit easier when the space around us is free of clutter and clean. If you want to make time for rest, you’ll need to make sure that you make room for it as well. If you’re wondering what I mean by making room… you can read the blog post I wrote here about clearing out the clutter in your life to make room for clarity, freedom and creativity.
You’ve got all the things you need to succeed. And if you ever forget, just come on back to my blog and know that I’m right here cheering you on!
