Change can be a scary word for most because oftentimes we as humans are prone to the nature of our routines and like the security that we find in consistency. However, in this life that we are blessed to live, one of the only constants that we can count on is, well…. CHANGE. In order for anything to grow, a change must occur but the opposite does not always bear the same effect. You do not have to experience the amazing benefits of growth just because things are changing. Change is inevitable but growth, my friend, is a choice. A very intentional one at that.
I’ve always been a dreamer, with high standards and expectations. I’ve been a go-getter and a doer for the majority of my life. And when I set a goal, I’m pretty great at tackling it. I don’t say all of this to brag, I’m just giving you a little background on who I am. In light of this, I’ve also found myself on the other side of things where I’ve felt stuck and just completely unsure of what to do next. I’ve felt inadequate, lost, scared, and incompetent. And then, I had to remind myself of all of the great things that I’ve done and how I’ve done them.
If you’ve found yourself on the latter side of the spectrum that I mentioned or even right in between, this list is for you. So, keep on reading my friend:
I. decide to change
The first thing that you have to do to achieve real growth in your life is to make the decision that this is truly what you want out of life. Everything that we do and encounter as a result of our actions begins with a simple thought or idea first. So, it makes sense that this is where we must start – with our mindset.
II. BE HONEST
In order for us to do the inner work, we need to have an honest conversation with ourselves to make sure that we are fully prepared for what we are about to undertake. Being honest with ourselves about what we want, our shortcomings, and our successes will prove to be an invaluable resource for navigating the uncertainty of the unknown that lies ahead.
III. TAKE ACTION TO CHANGE
Now that the decision has been made in our mind, the next step comes by implementing our desires through our actions. You can gather knowledge and make plans all day long but nothing will ever change until you decide to make the change. Things only happen when we decide to take action.
IV. FORM GOOD HABITS
As you begin to take action, the next best thing to do is to create good habits that will carry you and sustain you on this lifelong journey. Habits by definition are regular tendencies that we have that are hard to give up. They occur without much thought or effort and drive us either towards our goals or away from them. So, as you’re taking action on making positive change that will lead to growth in your life, be certain that you are creating good habits that support the direction that you want to go in. Some examples of great habits could be drinking more water, working out for 30 minutes a day, practicing gratitude and thankfulness in every situation, etc. The great thing about habits are that you are in control and you get to choose what you do!
V. STAY ACCOUNTABLE
This tip can throw people off the most because we oftentimes don’t want to let others in. We don’t necessarily want others to see our mess. But accountability is what helps keep us on the straight and narrow path. So, I’d encourage you to find someone you trust and let them in. Let them know what you’re striving for so that they can make sure that you are doing what you said you would be doing. Accountability doesn’t always feel great but it is always worth it.
Look, you’ve got this. You really do. You can start that business and raise your kids. You can drive to that soccer game and lead a team. You can cook dinner and then write the book. You can do anything that you set your mind to. You just have to set your mind to it and believe in yourself. I’m already on the other side of the internet with my belief sky high for you. Don’t limit yourself or short change yourself. Get that spark lit and let the fire burn. Change is on the horizon and growth is just around the corner.
