So, you’re a stay at home mom because you decided to stay at home and take care of your children. But now that you are there, you’ve found that your heart still has a burning desire to create, bring in an income, and better yet, feel alive. Now, don’t get me wrong, being able to devote your days and time at home to raise children is one of the greatest gifts that I believe that anyone can have and take on and absolutely brings a sense of purpose with it.
But, I’ll say for me, raising my children at home was and is not the only thing that makes me feel alive as a woman, wife, or a mother. I am so much more than just a mom and believe that you are too. So, to answer your question, here are 7 business ideas to get your wheels turning on what you can do while you are in the season of being a stay at home mom 🙂
IDEA #1: START AN E-COMMERCE STORE
E-commerce is an industry that is on the rise. Especially during this time in life when things seem to be very uncertain due to the COVID-19 pandemic that is running ramped in our society today. E-commerce can be a great way for moms who are at home with their children to start the business of their dreams but it will take some hard work. Platforms like Shopify or WooCommerce make setting up your online store a lot easier than if you tried to go at this alone and both of them offer several free resources and learning materials to guide you along your journey. IDEA #2: SELL ONLINE
Selling online takes a different form than starting an e-commerce store because in this example, selling online is a little less risky because you are in essence partnering with a company who already has a platform, you just provide your product. You can sell online on various platforms like Amazon, E-bay, Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, etc.
The biggest downside to selling online is that you must rely on another platform to push your product out for you and the platform that you choose has complete control over whether you get to use their platform or not. For instance, if you don’t comply with their rules and regulations, you could get shut down without a moment’s notice. And you also typically have to pay a fee to sell on platforms like Amazon, E-bay, & Etsy.
The pros of using these platforms is that they are very well known sites and people typically don’t have many reservations buying products from these platforms. Selling online is a great way to get your feet wet in the entrepreneurial journey with little start up costs.

From childcare, writing, tutoring, meal prep, personal training, digital marketing and even virtual assistants, there are several services that you can begin to offer from the comfort of your own home.

Do you love to write? Are you creative? Do you enjoy web design? If any of these spark your interest, then blogging might be a good fit for you. And although there are way more blogs on the internet today than there were 10 years ago, blogging is still alive and well and a great way for moms who are home with their kids to make some extra money. Starting a franchise is a great way to start a business if you have some cash in the bank or readily available to you. Franchises typically come with a blueprint for how to run the company because it is a part of a larger framework and the mentorship that one needs to make sure that it is successful also comes along with the business unlike a typical startup. Franchises also have the benefit of starting a business with a brand that is already known. Because of all of these pros, starting a franchise typically costs thousands of dollars to start. So, if this an area that you’re curious about, I’d recommend that you do some research on the brands that align most with your business goals and your personal values.
IDEA #6: CREATE A COURSE
The online education industry is booming right now and brought in a whopping $107 billion annually in 2015.
Yep, you read that correctly.
In 2015 online courses created by people like you and me generated $107 billion in revenue and this number has been on the rise since. In fact, recent statistics show that the e-learning market is projected to surpass $240 billion by 2021 and be worth $325 billion by 2025. That’s a lot of revenue that is accessible to and for a lot of people, including you as a stay at home mom.
It will just take a little work on your part to create something that people want to learn. So, do you have a specific skill? Or do you know a language? Do you like to teach others things you know? If so, you can create a course through platforms like Teachable or Kajabi. And you’ll be on your way to creating the business you’ve always dreamed of!
IDEA #7: MAKE A PRODUCT
What do you love? What makes you excited to create? There are so many needs in our world; some products can be enhanced while others have yet to be created. In either scenario, if you are creative in any sense, this area of entrepreneurship might be right for you.
